PM makes historic trip to Fort Smith

The Prime Minister’s tour made its annual return to the NWT, this time stopping in the Territories’ Garden Capital: Fort Smith. It was an historic visit on many levels.

This marked the 12th time PM Stephen Harper has visited the NWT since coming to power in 2006. It also represented the first ever time a sitting Prime Minister has even travelled to Fort Smith. With more than 500 people taking part in the day’s festivities, it is the largest community celebration ever undertaken by the Northwest Territories Conservative Association.

Featuring a free fish fry, musical entertainment and other Conservative MPs Bernard Valcourt, Leona Aglukkaq, Ryan Leef and James Moore, the day culminated in Queen Elizabeth Park on the evening of August 22.

Several residents also took part in the program with Acting Fort Smith Mayor Don Webb delivering an official welcome on behalf of the town and Anna Gervais starting things off with the singing of O Canada.
